Import Bank Transactions from CSV into Google Sheets
Upload CSV exports from any bank or credit card provider. BudgetSheet maps columns, handles debits and credits, and appends rows to your spreadsheet.
Not every account connects through Plaid, and sometimes you need historical transactions that live only in a CSV export. BudgetSheet's Manual Import tool reads your file, detects columns like Date, Amount, and Description, and lets you review mappings before appending rows to BSA_Transactions. Choose how to categorize imported rows, and optionally dedupe against transactions already on your sheet.
When CSV import helps
CSV import fills gaps that live bank connections cannot, including older statements, small credit unions, or accounts Plaid does not support yet.
- Automatic column detection with fuzzy matching, reviewed before import
- Handles separate Debit and Credit columns, calculating net amount
- Three categorization modes: AI auto-categorize, use CSV categories, or mark uncategorized
- User-defined category match patterns apply on import
- Optional dedupe against existing rows so re-uploading the same file is safe
Same sheet, same workflow
CSV-imported rows land in BSA_Transactions alongside Plaid imports. Use the same pivot tables, category rules, and budget formulas for one unified view of your finances, regardless of where each transaction came from.

How It Works
- Step 1: Export a CSV from your bank or credit card provider.
- Step 2: Open Sheet Tools → Manual Import in the BudgetSheet sidebar and upload the file.
- Step 3: Review column mappings and choose a categorization mode.
- Step 4: Confirm the import. Rows append to BSA_Transactions with fingerprint IDs for deduplication.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I import CSV files from any bank?
- Yes. BudgetSheet works with CSV exports from any bank or credit card provider. Column names vary by institution, but the import tool detects and maps common fields like Date, Amount, Description, and Category.
- What happens if I upload the same CSV twice?
- BudgetSheet assigns fingerprint IDs to imported rows. If the same transactions already exist on your sheet, they are skipped automatically, so re-uploading a file will not create duplicates.
- Can CSV import auto-categorize transactions?
- Yes. The default enrichment mode uses Plaid-powered categorization based on merchant names and transaction details. You can also use categories from your CSV file or import everything as UNCATEGORIZED for manual sorting later.
- Is CSV import available on all plans?
- Manual CSV import is available on Pro and Business plans. All users can import live transactions via Plaid on any plan during the free trial.
