YNAB alternative for Google Sheets
Looking for a YNAB alternative that stays in Google Sheets?
YNAB is a budgeting method inside an app. BudgetSheet is a bank feed into a Google Sheet. It is not a YNAB replacement if you want YNAB’s rules enforced for you. It is the alternative if the spreadsheet should be the database.
Best YNAB alternatives in 2026 for spreadsheet budgets
Unscoped “YNAB alternative” results are other apps. This page is only the Google Sheets version of that search. Prices checked 30 October 2026 on ynab.com/pricing.

Why people switch
Leave YNAB when the method is no longer what you want, and when you would rather own a table than an account inside an app. Do not leave if the method is the reason it works.
The sheet is the database
BudgetSheet writes transactions into Google Sheets and does not keep them as our product. You own the file. You can filter it, join it to a side project, or hand it to Gemini or Claude. On Pro and Business, holdings and investment transactions land in that same workbook, next to spending. YNAB’s history lives in YNAB. Exports exist, and they are a step. They are not the same as the budget already being a sheet.
A lower monthly price
YNAB’s monthly plan is $14.99. BudgetSheet Basic is $6 a month for up to five accounts, and Pro is $8. The annual gap is similar: YNAB is $109 a year, Basic is $59. You are not buying the same thing. YNAB includes the method, the mobile app, and household sharing. We include a feed and a sheet. Compare the bill only after you know which of those you use.
No required budgeting method
YNAB assigns every dollar a job and the screens are built around that. It is effective, and it is also why some people bounce. BudgetSheet will not teach you that method and will not stop you from using it. Setup creates only the core data sheets. Templates are included and install with one click, even with no paid plan. Transactions arrive categorized, and you can override those rules. A zero-based layout in a sheet is something you can build. Envelope rules that roll leftover money forward are something you would formula yourself. We do not ship them as a system.
AI without waiting on the vendor
Assistants that connect to Google Sheets can analyze a BudgetSheet file because the rows are already there. You do not wait for YNAB to add a chatbot, and you do not paste an export into a prompt and wonder if it is stale. Claude and Gemini see the sheet you see. That is the practical version of “we do not gatekeep the data.”
Where YNAB still wins
YNAB is not a worse spreadsheet. It is not a spreadsheet. These are the jobs it still does better.
The method, taught
YNAB’s classes, documentation, and the app itself train the give-every-dollar habit. BudgetSheet will not do that coaching. If you are new to budgeting and you want a system that pushes back when money is unassigned, YNAB is the product. A blank sheet will not tap you on the shoulder.
The phone
Checking a category while you stand in a store is a YNAB strength. BudgetSheet has no mobile app. Google Sheets on a phone is possible and it is a poor substitute for a budget app designed for a thumb. If that moment is the product, stay with YNAB.
A shared subscription
YNAB publishes household sharing on one plan, up to about six people. BudgetSheet sharing is “share the Google Sheet.” There is no partner login inside our add-on. For a couple that wants two apps on one bill, YNAB is further along.
Frequently asked questions
- Is YNAB free?
- No. YNAB publishes a 34-day trial on the web with no credit card, then $14.99 a month or $109 a year. There is a student offer that requires proof of enrollment. BudgetSheet’s trial is 15 days, then Basic at $6 a month or $59 a year. Neither product is free forever.
- How much is YNAB compared with BudgetSheet?
- YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year. BudgetSheet Basic is $6 a month or $59 a year, Pro is $8 or $79, and Business is $20 or $149. Basic is cheaper on both intervals. YNAB includes a mobile app and a budgeting method. BudgetSheet includes a Google Sheets feed. The cheaper plan is not the same feature list.
- Can BudgetSheet do YNAB-style zero-based budgeting?
- You can build that layout in the sheet, including as many custom columns as you need. BudgetSheet finds columns by heading name and will not enforce a method. There is no “give every dollar a job” screen, and leftover category balances do not roll forward unless your formulas do that. People who want the method policed should stay in YNAB. People who want the transactions in a sheet can keep the method themselves.
- Does YNAB export to Google Sheets?
- You can export from YNAB and import a file. That is a manual step, and the app remains the system of record. BudgetSheet’s ongoing import is the other direction: the bank feed lands in the sheet, and the sheet is the record. They solve different problems. A one-time export is not a Tiller-style or BudgetSheet-style feed.
- What should I use if I want YNAB and Excel?
- Not BudgetSheet. We are Google Sheets only, and we are not a YNAB clone. Tiller is the spreadsheet feed that also supports Excel, and it is annual only. If the requirement is “YNAB’s method, on my phone,” stay with YNAB.
