BudgetSheet vs YNAB

YNAB is a zero-based budgeting app with bank sync inside the app. BudgetSheet is a Google Sheets add-on that imports those transactions into a spreadsheet you own. The prices are different because the products are different. YNAB’s prices were checked on ynab.com on 30 October 2026.

Our take

Pick YNAB if you want the method enforced, a real mobile app, and one subscription you can share at home. Pick BudgetSheet if you want the transactions in Google Sheets, you want to pay $6 a month instead of $14.99, and you want Gemini, Claude, or your own formulas to read the rows without an export. YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year. BudgetSheet Basic is $6 a month or $59 a year. YNAB is not annual-only. Tiller is. Do not carry that complaint over. YNAB’s monthly plan exists, and it costs more than twice Basic. BudgetSheet will not teach you to give every dollar a job, and it has no phone app. If those two things are why YNAB works for you, a spreadsheet feed is a downgrade, not a bargain.

Frequently asked questions

Is BudgetSheet a YNAB alternative?
Only if the thing you want from YNAB is the bank data, and you want it in Google Sheets. It is not an alternative if you want YNAB’s method, classes, and mobile app with a different logo. The pages that rank for a bare “YNAB alternative” are usually other apps. This comparison is the spreadsheet case.
Why is BudgetSheet cheaper than YNAB?
Basic is $6 a month or $59 a year. YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year. The gap is real, and so is the missing product: no mobile budget app, no enforced categories, no shared YNAB-style household login. You are paying for a feed into a sheet. If you then spend the winter building YNAB inside that sheet, the hourly cost can erase the subscription gap.
Does YNAB bill monthly?
Yes. YNAB publishes $14.99 a month and $109 a year. Tiller is the competitor that is annual only. Do not mix those facts up when you are comparing bills. BudgetSheet also publishes both intervals, and the monthly Basic price is $6.
Can I move from YNAB to BudgetSheet without losing history?
You can export from YNAB and place that file in Google Sheets. BudgetSheet does not import a YNAB budget, targets, or category balances as a project. What it will do going forward is pull new bank transactions into the sheet. Treat the export as a one-time archive. Treat BudgetSheet as the feed from the switch date onward, unless you build the history layout yourself.
Will Gemini see my YNAB budget if I also use BudgetSheet?
Gemini sees the Google Sheet you connect. It does not see the inside of your YNAB account. After BudgetSheet is filling that sheet, Gemini and Claude can analyze those rows. They will not automatically see the old YNAB category decisions unless you copied them into the sheet.
